Oshima Tsumugi is a fine silk fabric made in The Amami Islands. This fabric, also known as a silk pongee, has a history of over 1,300 years. This fabric is distinguished by its colors that are made by repeatedly submerging the fabric into mud fields and is characterized as being durable but also breathable and comfortable. The Oshima Tsumugi has been presented to honored visitors to the island as it is a highly regarded luxurious garment .
