Overview
Kokuto Shochu, or brown sugar distilled liquor, is one of the largest industries in The Amami Islands. The drink is distinguished as being a clear liquor with a mild taste that generally ranges from 25-45 percent alcohol and has been referred to as Japanese rum. While Shochu can be made with many different bases and can be found all over Japan, the brown sugar Shochu is quite unique to the area as Amami is the only place in Japan that produces this alcoholic beverage.
