Amami Oshima is an island with a unique combination of Ryukyu dynasty and Satsuma clan (Mainland Japan), cultures.
One of its most famous musical traditions is Shima-uta, the local fork song, characterized by the sounds of falsetto vocals comped by the shamisen (the guiter-like string instrument) and drums, which continue to be passed down today.
The Hachigatsu dori (August Dance), which is performed in August of the lunar calendar, is a traditional event to thank ancestors and deities, and pray for a good harvest, with different styles that have been inherited depending on the region.
Also,the Oshima Tsumugi, which boasts a 1,300-year history, is Japan’s representative high-quality silk fabric.
In the island’s food culture, Keihan rice bowl, which is eaten with chicken broth, and kokuto shochu, a liquor which is made from sugar cane and rice, are famous.
In communities, the island embraces a strong spirit of mutual support called Yui (bandage), where people help each other in agricultural work and house construction, which continues today. These cultural elements and ways of life, developed in harmony with nature, offer warmth and comfort to visitors.
